How to fix scratched door?

Looking for some expertise on home repair -- specifically fixing a scratched door. We have a Chocolate Lab who scratches at the door when we leave (this is an exterior door to our garage) and he's scratched it up pretty badly in some places.
I don't know what the door is made of, but the home is just a cookie-cutter town home that we rent (so I need to fix this to avoid charges).
