I left my grass large in the winter. Now it's brown and unsightly. What do I do?

Getting an inexperienced residence operator, I left my grass higher (three.five-4" or so) over the winter season. Now as the snow melted the grass is brown and splotchy. It appears as if there is a whole lot of matted down dead grass. If I rake it pulls up the brown grass fairly easy. I am pondering why
